Dortmund Airport concludes the first half of 2024 with moderate growth, continuing to build on the impressive performance of last year's record. A total of 1,453,528 passengers departed or arrived at Dortmund Airport from January to June. This figure matches the first half of 2023, which was a record year, and has slightly increased by 1.8 percent (2023: 1,427,285 passengers). In the second quarter, the airport recorded 818,421 passengers, nearly 17,000 fewer than the same period in 2023. (2023: 834.985).
Although an increase in passenger numbers was anticipated for 2024, Guido Miletic, Head of Airport Services and Marketing & Sales, is not surprised by the figures: “Despite the current reduction in Wizz Air's capacity, we managed to maintain last year's level.” Since March, Wizz Air has temporarily cut back or cancelled some routes due to engine maintenance. “Trends are not just isolated observations; it’s crucial to look at the overall development and the various interrelated factors. Since the significant downturn in air traffic four years ago, we've achieved sustainable growth. With this half-year result, we are confident we can continue to support this trend in the long term,” says Guido Miletic.
Katowice in Poland remains the most popular destination from Dortmund, with around 206,000 passengers in the first six months. Next in the rankings are Palma de Mallorca with nearly 96,000 passengers and Bucharest with about 87,000. May was the busiest month in the first half of the year, with a total of 282,052 passengers.
During the summer holidays, the airport expects passenger numbers to rise. Additional boosts to passenger volumes are anticipated from the increased frequency of flights to Istanbul since early July and Condor's new route to Mallorca.
