Ciao Italia – From Dortmund Airport to the Eternal City

All roads lead to Rome, and now directly from Dortmund Airport as well. The airport is delighted to announce that the Italian capital will return as an integral part of the route network from 25 October 2026. Travellers will then be able to fly directly from Dortmund to Rome-Fiumicino Airport in under two hours, seven days a week. With over 2.8 million inhabitants, Rome is Italy’s largest city and among the preeminent cultural and touristic destinations in Europe.
The airport announced the launch of the new route to Milan just a few days ago. Now it is adding Rome as yet another attractive destination in Italy. “There is significant demand for travel to Southern Europe. The fact that we are able to expand our route network to include another Italian destination is an important step in our growth trajectory”, says Guido Miletic, Head of Airport Services + Marketing & Sales. "Rome is home to an unparalleled blend of historical sights, vibrant culture and outstanding culinary tradition. It therefore fills us with pleasure to welcome the Italian capital to our flight schedule, and we are absolutely confident that passengers will appreciate this new service.
"Hosting more than 22 million guests each year, Rome is Italy's most visited touristic destination and an unrivalled open-air museum at the confluence between antiquity, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Visitors follow in the footsteps of ancient Romans to explore world-famous sights such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum. They toss coins into the water of the legendary Trevi Fountain, likely making wishes for a speedy return to Rome. Aside from the known attractions, Rome catches the eye with its very particular lifestyle, bustling squares and varied cuisine as well. The city's nightlife ranges from open-air bars and restaurants to trendy neighbourhoods such as Trastevere and a variety of entertainment hotspots and clubs in the Testaccio neighbourhood.
Visitors are also enthralled by the Vatican, an independent state at the heart of Rome that is home to St Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Rome is also predestined for combining city breaks with beach holidays, as the Mediterranean coast is just around 30 kilometres away, ensuring a climate that transforms the Italian capital into a popular destination all year round.
Flights are now available for booking on Wizz Air.
