Departure of the Maiden Flight to Palermo

Sun, sea and the Italian way of life are now just around two-and-a-half hours away: Dortmund Airport and Wizz Air jointly launched the new route to Sicily with today’s maiden flight to Palermo, adding an attractive Mediterranean destination to the flight schedule. Passengers can now fly to the Italian island’s capital three days a week, namely on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Wizz Air is therefore introducing the first of three new destinations in Italy, offering travellers a convenient direct connection to Sicily.

With around 300 days of sunshine a year and more than 1,000 kilometres of coastline, Sicily boasts ideal conditions for beach and active holidays, as well as experiences close to nature. “The new route to Palermo is an excellent start to Wizz Air’s expansion into Italy and a real blessing for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in Sicilian island life”, says Guido Miletic, Head of Airport Services + Marketing & Sales. “With its mild climate, the island is a great destination all year round – and not just in the summer months.”

Palermo has plenty to offer even aside from the beach and the sea. With over 2,700 years of history, the city combines a variety of cultural influences with unique Arab-Norman architecture, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the cultural highlights is the Teatro Massimo, Italy’s largest opera house, which delights audiences all year round with operas, ballets and concerts. What’s more, the vibrant street food culture is a paradise for connoisseurs and invites visitors to discover authentic Sicilian specialities alongside Italian classics.

But that’s not all there is to Italy: Wizz Air will launch its route from Dortmund to Milan on 1 October, and daily flights from Dortmund to Rome will also begin on 26 October with the start of the winter timetable.
