From Dortmund Airport to the Sicilian coast

Sun, south, Sicily: Dortmund Airport is delighted to announce that Wizz Air is continuing to grow the range of travel options at the Ruhr region airport. Starting 8 September 2026, Italy enthusiasts will be able to travel to the Sicilian capital Palermo three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Flights to the largest island in the Mediterranean take around 2.5 – ideal for a short trip or sunny break in the south of Europe.
The vibrant city sits perched on the north coast of Sicily on the bay of the Tyrrhenian Sea. From fine sandy beaches such as the famous Mondello beach to unspoilt bays, the area is predestined for seaside holidaymakers in particular. At the same time, Palermo is known for its impressive history and varied architecture. The Cattedrale di Palermo is among the city landmarks and combines Norman, Gothic, Baroque and Arabic influences. Other attractions include the magnificent Palazzo dei Normanni with its Byzantine mosaics, the eye-catching Fontana Pretoria and the Teatro Massimo, Italy's largest opera house.
“With this expansion of the route network, Wizz Air is adding to our range of destinations an attractive destination in southern Europe with long summers and a Mediterranean climate”, emphasises Guido Miletic, Head of Airport Services + Marketing & Sales. “Palermo is a vibrant city brimming with possibilities and ideal for travellers who like to combine culture with beach holidays." And Sicily is a popular holiday destination not just in summer: The island is blessed with a mild climate and ideal conditions for Mediterranean holidays in the early and late season.
The coastal town is home to excellent eateries as well: of particular note is the street food culture that shapes the cityscape of Palermo. Besides classic Italian espresso, visitors can discover specialities such as arancini and cannoli as well as other regional delicacies at the traditional markets and experience the wide spectrum of authentic Sicilian cuisine on the ground.
Flights are now available to book at Wizz Air.
