Strong firsth alf-year at Dortmund Airport

Dortmund Airport reports a successful first half of the year. In the first six months of the year, a total of 1,605,317 arriving and departing passengers were processed. This means that passenger volume has increased by more than 120,000 travelers compared to the same period last year, representing an 8.2 percent increase. The main driver of growth is the airline Wizz Air, which has already expanded its route network by six routes this year and increased its passenger volume at the airport by nearly a quarter (+23 percent).
Although the airport recorded a slight 3.7 percent decline in passenger traffic during the first three months of the year due to the loss of Ryanair capacity, travel volume picked up significantly starting in April. In the second quarter alone, more than 953,000 people used the airport for their travels. That equals nearly 150,000 more guests than last year (+18 percent). In each of those three months, the number of passengers exceeded 300,000. With approximately 333,000 passengers, May has been the busiest month of 2026 so far. It thus nearly reached the level of the month with the highest figure in the previous year (August 2025: 337,628 passengers), even though August traditionally sees even higher passenger volumes due to summer vacation.
The airport expects this positive trend to continue in the coming months. With the start of summer vacation on July 17, the airport will enter its peak season, which will cause demand for air travel to rise significantly once again. Shortly after the holidays, the airport, in partnership with Wizz Air, will expand its route network to include three new routes to Palermo, Rome, and Milan. This will provide further momentum for air travel, while offering travelers attractive new destinations in Southern Europe.
