Wizz Air’s first plane took off from Dortmund Airport to Katowice exactly 15 years ago. A new route has been inaugurated for the anniversary: The Hungarian airline has been offering flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays to Ohrid in northern Macedonia since 2 July 2019.
That makes Ohrid the airline’s 30th destination from Dortmund Airport. The route network from the Ruhr area has been expanded continuously over the past 15 years. Last year, the airline reached a preliminary high with 1.45 million passengers travelling from Dortmund. Guido Miletic, Head of Marketing & Sales at Dortmund Airport, explained the reasons: “Wizz Air and the Dortmund Airport can look back on a long-standing partnership, which has grown continuously. The routes to Eastern Europe are well established in the Ruhr area and are popular with business travellers, tourists and passengers who want to visit families in their countries of origin. The high capacity utilisation on all routes and the large catchment area are good arguments for the Dortmund location.”
Andras Rado, Corporate Communication Manager of Wizz Air, explained: “It has been a great pleasure for us to fly to and from Dortmund for the last fifteen years. Dortmund has been a stable point in our extensive network since the beginning of our business activities. We have carried over 13 million passengers to and from Dortmund since our first flight. We are very pleased that we have developed our partnership together and fly from the Ruhr area to 30 destinations in 15 countries! We hope that in future Wizz Air will be able to offer millions of people in the region cheap flights from Dortmund to the rest of Europe with high-quality on-board services.”
