Dortmund Airport has embarked on a growth course just in time for the start of the summer season on the 27th of March: The new flight schedule offers passengers about 30% more destinations than before the pandemic. They can choose from around 50 destinations in more than 20 countries. There will also be more than a 10% increase in flight movements than in the summer season of 2019.

"We are pleased with the positive growth. There's no two ways about it, the pandemic also hit us pretty hard. However, because of its good mix of airlines, in a nationwide comparison Dortmund Airport has so far proved more resilient to the decline in travel due to the pandemic," says airport CEO Ludger van Bebber.

"Demand for travel is as high as ever and seems to be increasing with the prospect of the sunny months. We are seeing an increase in bookings and the airlines are responding with a suitably diverse and attractive range of flights," continues van Bebber. For example, Wizz Air offers the largest selection from Dortmund, with more than 30 destinations. Eurowings and Ryanair have also significantly increased their market share during the pandemic.

Masks are still mandatory at Dortmund Airport

It remains to be seen how the pandemic situation will develop and any possible effects this may have on travel. At the moment, masks are still mandatory at Dortmund Airport. "In this way we want to protect our passengers, crews and employees as well as possible and at the same time enable them to relax during their trip," explains the CEO of Flughafen Dortmund GmbH.

As well as established destinations such as Palma de Mallorca, Oporto and Budapest, Dortmund Airport is offering holidaymakers new destinations in Turkey this summer. SunExpress is returning to Antalya on the summer flight schedule after break of several years. From the 30th of June, Zonguldak will be the German-Turkish airline's third destination from Dortmund besides Izmir and Antalya: there will be a direct flight to the city on the Black Sea from Dortmund every Thursday. SunExpress is also increasing the frequency of its connections to Itzmir.

Sun seekers can also look forward to a selection of Greek destinations. Among them are Crete, Rhodes and Thesaloniki. Further southern destinations include the Italian island of Sicily, and Split in Croatia.

Range of destinations for holidaymakers, businesses and city travellers

We are more than satisfied with the wide choice of destinations. Not just holidaymakers but also business travellers and city lovers can take advantage of a wide variety of offers at our airport," says Guido Miletic, head of airport services and marketing at Dortmund Airport. In summer, WizzAir, SunExpress, Eurowings and Ryanair fly to and from Dortmund. Trade Air and ETF Airways also fly to Pristina.

"We are also pleased to be able to offer another popular attraction right here soon," says airport director van Bebber. "We are planning to start offering guided tours of the airport again and thus give people a glimpse behind the scenes." These had been suspended until now due to the pandemic. Dortmund Airport will announce the exact starting date on its website in good time.
