Airport CEO Ludger van Bebber presented the preliminary traffic figures for 2022 at the last meeting of the supervisory board of Flughafen Dortmund GmbH in 2022. The economic and financial plan for the coming year was also approved and an outlook for the coming months was given.

2022 passenger development

A total of 2,177,487 passengers used Dortmund Airport from January to October 2022 (previous year: 1,385,268). The 2021 passenger numbers was already exceeded in September. “It is particularly pleasing that passenger numbers have regularly been above the pre-crisis level of 2019 since June 2022”, reports van Bebber.

In a nationwide comparison, Dortmund Airport is characterised by its strong recovery rate. Even if the overall German air traffic has partially recovered from the pandemic compared to the previous year, the 2019 passenger numbers have not yet been reached again - as the figures from the airport association ADV show.

In Dortmund, the German-Turkish airline SunExpress has even expanded its service to Turkey and is also flying to Antalya and Izmir in the winter season. “We are delighted with the extensive flight offerings, which were even more diverse than in the previous record year of 2019, especially in the summer months”, said the airport CEO.

Outlook for 2023

Dortmund Airport is investing further in its infrastructure so that it can be as successful next summer as it was this year. Among other things, a third passenger checkpoint will be built, which should help save passengers long waiting times before departure, especially in the summer months, when there are a lot of passengers. Entry will also be accelerated by the construction of a new central entry checkpoint with four additional boxes. And additional staff will be recruited, particularly for the area of aircraft handling.

In accordance with Dortmund Airport’s sustainability program, the Supervisory Board has decided to purchase another electric aircraft tug. Aircraft tugs are used in aircraft positioning. Two electric aircraft tugs are already being used at Dortmund Airport for this purpose. In the long term, the entire airport vehicle fleet will be converted to environmentally friendly drive systems if possible.

In view of the pandemic, energy crisis and inflation, it remains difficult to give an outlook on developments in the coming year, particularly passenger booking behaviour.
