Traffic restrictions

Attention motorists and AirportExpress users: The expansion of the A40 motorway is in full swing. Between the Dortmund-Ost junction and the Dortmund/Unna motorway junction, the motorway B1 is being widened from four to six lanes over a length of 9.5 km. This will improve the flow of traffic on the most important route to Dortmund Airport, ensuring it’s fit for the future. It’s needed because it is predicted that there will be more than 100,000 vehicles a day in this area in 2025.

But before the actual lane extension can begin, a total of 13 structures along the route must be renewed or replaced. During the construction period, this has repeatedly led to the B1 being closed due to construction. Now a new date has been set for closures:

There are no reports at present.

Allocate more time

Detours will be signposted accordingly. Passengers and visitors who want to travel to or depart from Dortmund Airport on these dates should expect longer arrival/departure travle times and take this into account in their planning. Dortmund Airport generally recommends travellers to arrive at their airline’s check-in counter 90 to 120 minutes before departure. Passengers who have already checked in online and are only travelling with hand luggage should allow enough time for the security check and should be at the gate at least 40 minutes before departure.

Further improvement of the motorway

The entire expansion of the A 40 motorway between the Dortmund-Ost junction and the Dortmund/Unna junction is expected to take 5 to 6 years, with expected completion in 2023. Further dates and project details can be viewed on the website of the project management company DEGES commissioned by the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
