Dortmund Airport is pleased to announce positive results for the first quarter of 2024. With an increase of 6.6 percent in flight movements and around 7.2 percent in passenger numbers compared to the same period last year, the airport has had a successful start. A total of 635,107 passengers used the airport in the first three months (2023: 592,300 passengers).
The results reflect the airport's continued efforts to achieve its target of 3 million passengers by the end of the year. The outlook for the next few months is nevertheless rather cautious: “The airport and its partners have once again achieved a very pleasing result. It is already foreseeable that the airline Wizz Air will have to reduce its capacity by 10 percent this year due to the extraordinary repair of the Pratt & Whitney engines for some A321neo series. This will also have an impact on Wizz Air’s offerings at Dortmund Airport,” says airport managing director Ludger van Bebber.
In the first quarter, trips to Katowice (99,112 passengers) and Bucharest (41,834 passengers) were particularly popular. Connections to Gdansk (+90 percent), Pristina (+60 percent), Tirana (+46 percent) and Palma de Mallorca (+39 percent) also saw significant passenger growth compared to the same period last year. The weeks around the Christmas and Easter holidays, both of which fell proportionately in the first quarter, were among the periods with the highest passenger volume during the period under review.
With the changeover to the summer flight schedule, the airport has expanded its range of destinations since the end of March and at the same time increased the frequencies of some existing routes. Thanks to the summer flight schedule that extends into the fourth quarter, travellers from Dortmund can now choose from 41 destinations in more than 20 countries.
